Rainer Grieger (1962) has headed the Department of Public Safety and Order, Police and Public Order Law, and Crime Prevention at the Brandenburg Ministry of the Interior and Local Government since July 2026, where he previously served as head of the Central Department beginning in 2021. He is a member of Working Group II—Internal Security (including threat prevention, counterterrorism, and police affairs)—of the Conference of Interior Ministers (IMK). Prior to that, he served as president of the Brandenburg State Police Academy for over 17 years.
After graduating from high school, he studied at the University of Applied Sciences for Public Administration in Cologne to become a senior police officer and, after graduating with a degree in public administration, was appointed as a detective inspector (1984). After working on the staff of the State Office of Criminal Investigation and as an investigator in the criminal investigation department of the Duisburg police headquarters, he joined the development staff of the Brandenburg State Office of Criminal Investigation in 1991. After training for the higher police service at the Police Command Academy in Münster-Hiltrup in 1994, he worked for the Potsdam Police and the Brandenburg State Office of Criminal Investigation (including special investigations into OC). From 2001 to 2004, he was responsible for criminal police matters at the Brandenburg Ministry of the Interior. During this time, he also represented the German Federal States in the EU Council working group on terrorism in Brussels.
Mr. Grieger is also the author and co-editor of the anthology “Knowledge Management in Public Administrations”, new framework conditions, instruments and pilot projects for coping with the demographic change process.
He has acted as a peer review report for various accreditation procedures for study programmes and certificates related to the police.
